Our immune system defends our body against bacteria, viruses, pollen and other foreign substances. Primarily made up of several different types of white blood cells, this highly complex system also monitors our body for cells that have started malfunctioning, like tumor cells.
Immune System Changes
- The immune system can becomes less effective
- The body is less able to fight infections or recover from a cold or the flu
- Vaccines may not work as well as they do in younger adults
- The immune system’s ability to destroy cancer cells may slow down
What we can do
The immune system is sensitive to nutritional deficiencies. In addition to a healthy diet, we need to make sure that we get adequate amounts of zinc and vitamins E and B6.
Regular exercise helps our immune system fight infection.
Ongoing stress can weaken the immune system. We need to find healthy ways to cope with it by relaxing – meditating, doing Yoga, listening to soothing music, etc.
These strategies can help boost our immune system, so that it functions at peak efficiency.
