Correct identification, evaluation, and care play a very important role in managing any disease. However, it is very difficult when it comes to neonates or newborns as they cannot express through speech!

Hypertension in neonates is attributed to improper functioning of the kidney or heart. In most cases, the defect is present at birth with exact cause unknown. A few examples include narrowing of a large blood vessel of the heart, narrowing of a major blood vessel of the kidney, and when the blood vessel between the aorta and pulmonary artery does not close after birth. In a few cases, when the newborn is put on a breathing machine for other reasons, it affects the lungs and causes high blood pressure. Other causes include tumors, thyroid problems, or exposure to illegal drugs.

Even though it is very difficult for a new mother to identify the following signs and symptoms of very high blood pressure. A few of them are:

  • Irritability or lethargy
  • Seizures
  • Respiratory distress
  • Congestive heart failure, this is more of a result of hypertension than a sign or symptom

To conclude, seek immediate medical attention when the baby is not responding, vomiting continuously, or has a bluish skin.
