Well known for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties, honey offers a number of health benefits. Infants and adults alike can use honey for a number of health issues.
Kids with gastroenteritis and bacterial diarrhea can be given a mixture of water and honey as an ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution). Honey contains sugar (70-80%), minerals and water, which means it can be used instead of glucose. It’s excellent for hydration and boost energy.
Infections of the upper respiratory tract result in night coughs and sleep disturbances in children. Honey products have been found to be extremely effective in providing relief in these instances.
Honey’s infection fighting ability makes it ideal in helping adults cope with seasonal allergies. In fact, honey beats cough medicine in reducing the frequency of coughs and colds.
Chronic wounds and burns heal faster when honey is applied topically. It’s also proven to be more effective than oral antibiotics in treating staph infections and recurring cellulitis.
Its other uses that remain to be explored include, but are not limited to reducing the occurrence of radiation related skin problems in breast cancer patients.
