Understanding Chlamydia: A Bacterial Infection!

An easily overlooked infection for which the signs and symptoms are not easily observed

Chlamydia, caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis, is a sexually transmitted infection. It affects both men and women and generally overlooked as the symptoms are mild and appear after several weeks of exposure.

Signs and symptoms observed in women include:

  • Lower abdomen pain
  • Painful urination
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Bleeding between periods and after sex

Signs and symptoms observed in men include:

  • Lower abdomen pain
  • Painful urination
  • Discharge from penis
  • Testicular pain in men

In a few cases, the bacteria also affect the rectum that is indicated at a later stage by rectal pain, discharge, or bleeding. If untreated, chlamydia can lead to medical complications like infertility and reactive arthritis. Therefore, consult your healthcare specialist if you have a discharge from vagina, penis, or rectum, or pain during urination.
