Ayur (life) veda (science) is an ancient system of natural and holistic medicine that originated in India thousands of years ago. Several ancient treatises, most notably the Atharva Veda that dates back to 5000 years, have contributed to its development and evolution. Ayurveda primarily focuses on disease prevention by addressing the underlying cause of the problem. It treats and eliminates the source, not the symptoms.
The Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and the Ashtanga Hrudaya are the oldest known texts on Ayurveda. These texts include the effects of the 5 elements – earth, water, air, fire, space on our body and keeping them balanced for a healthy and happy life. Depending on our constitution, each of us is influenced by certain elements more than others. Ayurveda has classified these as 3 different doshas:
Vata: Air and space elements dominate
Pitta: Fire element dominates
Kapha: Earth and water elements dominate
These doshas affect not only the body type, but also other characteristics like food preferences, digestion, temperament, the state of mind and emotions.
